Colette Balcaen

Born in Saskatchewan in 1947, Colette Balcaen has roots in France and Québec. She has completed her Fine Arts at the University of Manitoba in 2005. As a multidisciplinary artist, she works with the everyday: threads, yarns, fabrics, sewing notions and repeated domestic daily tasks. She strives to address women issues by using the parallel between written text and woven threads; both combine row upon row of information to form a whole.  Fabrics, like texts, are articulated in a calligraphic continuum seen in this type of manual repetition, which creates a larger meaning. Passionate for her Franco-Manitoban language and culture, and her great respect for the privileged relationship that she has with my mother and other women in her life, all contribute to the content of the artworks.
