Page history last edited by karen hibbard 13 years, 7 months ago

Karen currently teaches drawing at the School of Art, University of Manitoba. She completed a Masters of Fine Art from Concordia University in 2000.

Karen is active in her arts community and is a member of Martha Street Studio as well as aceartinc.. She has been on the Board of Directors as an artist member at the media arts center, Studio XX (Montréal) as well as at the print media cooperative, Open Studio (Toronto).

In 2008, she did an artist residency in Denmark at a print cooperative where she made etchings from digital images of discarded scribbled paper. The event being recognized was the the unconscious, the quiet, the constant and the pathological. One is constantly in flux, leaving traces of oneself.

And she completed another artist residency in Akureyri, Iceland in 2007. The images that you see here were inspired by this residency. She discovered the yuletide lads of Icelandic culture. They are tricksters and children are warned to watch out for them especially at Christmas. In her installation these trolls are re-enacting addictive or anti-social behaviours. This series continues an engagement with psychological and biological states.

Her work comments upon and reinterprets society’s views. She has an interest in issues of aging, addiction, gender roles and community. Often imagery is delivered with a sense of absurdity.  Looking for discrepancies within the work is a key to understanding its meaning.

Karen is in many collections including Loto-Québec and La banque nationale du Canada.
